Performance Monitor Changes in Version 2024.2—Part I: Grouping

We’ve been tinkering with DBPLUS PERFORMANCE MONITOR, again, and this time it’s all about getting a handle on those elusive user sessions with a feature that’s as adaptable as a chameleon in a rainbow—session grouping.

Flexible Session Grouping

The new functionality in the version Version 2024.2 allows for the flexible grouping of user sessions based on ten selectable categories. This tailored grouping enables administrators to view and analyze database sessions more effectively.  You can slice and dice the view by ‘Machine’, ‘Program’, ‘Module’, ‘Action’, or ‘Wait’. Each offers valuable insights into the sessions’ current state and activities.

By grouping sessions according to these categories, DBAs can uncover critical information that may be pivotal for troubleshooting issues as they arise.

Interactive Grouping Interface

To embark on this grouping adventure, one simply needs to engage with the cog icon (#1 on the screenshot below). A gentle tap on the ‘+’ sign allows the user to add columns that capture their interest.

This intuitive interface allows for no-drama customization of the session overview, ensuring that only relevant data is displayed.

Real-Time SQL Monitoring

A significant enhancement in this release is the ability to monitor SQL queries in real-time within the grouped sessions. Through a keyhole into the workings of your database, session grouping lets you spy on SQL queries as they unfold.

Users can select interesting sessions and observe their statuses and the SQL statements executed at that moment. This real-time capability ensures that DBAs can immediately react to changes and anomalies as they happen. Not after they’ve made a significant impact.

Automatic Refresh Options (Because Who Has the Time to Click Buttons)

The world of databases waits for no one. That’s why you can refresh your data overview automatically at intervals that suit your fancy. Or, you can simply smack that refresh button whenever the mood strikes. It keeps everything up-to-date, ensuring you’re always in the know, without the fuss of manual refreshes..

Visuals and Practical Use

You can see how the integration looks in practice in the images below. Each depicts different aspects of the session grouping interface. es to monitor, analyze, and optimize database sessions.

The enhancements in session grouping are part of DBPLUS’s commitment to providing robust, user-friendly tools that address the real-world challenges faced by database administrators. By offering detailed, customizable, and real-time insights into database sessions, DBPLUS Performance Monitor ensures that administrators are well-equipped to maintain optimal performance and swiftly address issues as they arise.
